I work as a preschool teacher and have been involved in educating children both formally and informally for the past 15 years. I have been involved with various liberation movements since I was a teenager. As the mother of an African American son, I was personally invested in providing him with a toolset to empower himself within a system that does not often recognize either his gifts or his humanity. Toward that end I became interested in bringing peace practices to him and other black children. I lead an African American homeschool group for several years where I did “peace camps” in addition to academics. I am proud of my home-based work I did in southeast DC called Peace Warriors. In that group I brought the “power of the pause” to a small group of black boys and teens in my son’s circle as well as exposing them to different traditions like the Quakers and the Baha’i communities.
In summary, I am a Buddhist, mother, teacher, writer, poet and performer. I believe I bring both a spiritual practice and a commitment to the community that would be of benefit to the Minds board.
